The WV Jags are excited to announce that Dr. Barry Jerkins has joined our team as the first member of our newly established Advisory Board. In addition to this role, Dr. Jerkins will serve as the team Chaplain and Head of Character Development, bringing his wealth of knowledge and leadership to inspire and support our players on and off the court.
Dr. Jerkins, a Navy veteran, former president of the Linn-Benton NAACP, and motivational speaker, has dedicated his life to uplifting and empowering communities. With a strong focus on teamwork, perseverance, and overcoming adversity, he has left a profound impact across Oregon and beyond. Dr. Jerkins is also the founder of the first-ever NAACP College Branch at Oregon State University and has served on Oregon’s Department of Public Safety Standards and Training.
His message is clear: success is more than individual talent—it’s about unity and resilience. “One player can’t win a game alone,” Dr. Jerkins reminds us. “It takes a team effort.” He aims to foster trust, mentorship, and strong role models, guiding our players to thrive both in sports and in life.
Dr. Jerkins also emphasizes the importance of character in personal and professional success. “Integrity is a fundamental quality that impacts various aspects of life by building trust, enhancing reputation, promoting ethical behavior, creating inner peace, inspiring others, and fostering professional success,” says Jerkins. His insights will help players grow both as athletes and as individuals.
With the influence of his mentor, Dr. Cal O. Henry, and his background as an ordained minister with a Ph.D. in Metaphysics, Dr. Jerkins will help the WV Jags’ players develop the skills they need to overcome life’s challenges, both on and off the court. His emphasis on personal growth and community involvement aligns perfectly with our team’s values.
Marion Clark, WV Jags owner and president, personally invited Dr. Jerkins to join the team, knowing his unique insights would have a lasting impact on our athletes. “Dr. Jerkins has been instrumental in helping us figure out our direction after some setbacks early this summer. I am honored to have someone with his experience and history of success to help guide our program and players into the future,” said Clark. As we prepare for the upcoming season, we’re confident that Dr. Jerkins’ guidance will help shape not just better athletes, but better individuals, strengthening both the team and the community.
In addition to Dr. Jerkins, we are currently seeking five more dedicated individuals to join our Advisory Board. If you are interested in serving and contributing to the growth of our team and community, please reach out to Marion Clark at mclark@wvjags.com for more information. We look forward to hearing from passionate leaders eager to make a difference!
